18. Exposure to Western music through a college teacher in Fullerton, Anita Shepardson.

And I remember, there was this wonderful, wonderful teacher, a college teacher named Anita Shepardson. And she went to Japan one year, and just loved it so much that she established a Japanese club. And she decided that we were going to be exposed to western music, and so any chance she had when they had ensembles at the church or some concerts that were available for young people, she would call a few of us up, and she’d pick us up in a car, and she’d take us. It was just wonderful, you know, an introduction to western music. And I loved it! But I got hooked on to the standard. I remember, they would have a whole hour of classical music, and I was, you know, hooked to the radio, and they also had that kind of program at the junior high, as well. But the whole class, the whole school would go into the auditorium, and we’d listen to a whole hour of the standard, which was classical music but they would explain everything. It was just wonderful! It was, you know, my early exposure to western music, and I just fell in love with it.
