Yes, we had kimonos. This was because we had trusted friends who were kind enough to send us some of the boxes we packed them in, in moth balls, in our suitcases that we left behind, and they were kind enough to send those. And they would share, too, of course! You become a giant community of sharing.

I also heard that some people made kimono with the fabric they might get from Montgomery Ward.

That’s right! Yes. A lot of people did. And you order something that was flowery, well, that looks pretty close to a kimono, and we would order the yardage and there were a number of ladies, of course, who had, you know, learned this in Japan, and so they would make kimonos. So, we had an interesting combination of things.
