58. My parents played music every Sunday before work at their Chinese restaurant. People came to play with them, predominantly koto, but also shakuhachi and shamisen.

But the weekends were taken up because my parents went back to, of course, the music, their passion, so Sunday before going to the restaurant, before we opened, they’d be up by 10 o’clock, and they were either sharing their music or playing. And pretty soon, our house was full of people learning shakuhachi or playing shamisen or playing koto, dominantly playing koto, and we were full of people. And we said, you have to leave because we have to change to go to work. And at 2:30, the house was empty, we’d go to work, barely get the doors open, and we’d greet customers. And that was our life for 10 full years, but we kept going and going. We had to!
