I think it helped me go deeper because since I knew Japanese pretty well I was able to ask questions, you know, more deeply about the culture in certain parts, so that when I had to explain it in English, I could really do it thoroughly ‘cause you could get to the heart of the matter.

there’re certain words that you can’t fully translate, and you have to use a lot of words in order to make that…communicate that thought. But I preface it always by saying you can’t translate this with one word, and I will explain it, why. Then, I’ll translate it. But it is, and if you know the language, you can really get into deeper territory. And so when you understand the culture deeply, then when you explain yourself, you can do a better job of it. And knowing the philosophy, then you can get to the heart of the matter. You know, why people act or define things the way they do, and why certain things are so important and why craftsmen work at the level they do, and why they do that.
