Uh-huh. Mess hall was mostly indoor stage, we would say, so we would go from one mess hall to another to perform, you know. And then later, they had an outdoor stage, so we would perform there, too, you know.

The backdrop (prompting her mother)…
M
Oh yeah, the gunny sacks, they painted over that to make the scenery (laughing). How clever they can be, though! (Note: Shirley’s note said this Issei artist’s name was Enjiro Kodani)
K
I think his name is on Mary’s notes somewhere, who the man is who did the artwork. One of the backdrop is in the photo here with Mount Fuji in the background, but one of the men in camp drew the backdrop. (add photo)

Ah, arewa daredaka ne (“who was that now”) I forget, yo, ne. (Japanese remarks). Matsui Suimin-san ka? (Was it Matsui Suimin?) Oh, he made the wig, yo, chimney kara, ne? (made wigs with the stove pipe).
M
you have to wear wig and make-up and the costume. It was quite a challenge! But that was the only entertainment they had in camp, so people were very happy about it, you know.
