7. My mother, also from a wealthy family, aspired to become a dentist in the U.S.7.

she was born in Shingu which is in the Wakayama Prefecture, but it was a larger city. And her mother’s parents owned a large soy sauce factory, so she was born very comfortably, you know, into comfort. And her father was the manager of the company itself, and he had married the daughter so they were living there, and comfortably. And my mother, of course, was studying all the arts and sent to finishing school and all of that. She, unfortunately, had misfortune however, because her father would re-married, and it was a very difficult time for my mother. However, she came over here. She really wanted to be a dentist, can you imagine? And I realized, when she used to tell me about these things, I would think, how free she was even at that age, and those times when women really did not go into a profession of any sort. And she said I always wanted to be dentist, and she said maybe because I had bad teeth. And that was her goal, but she was a very free, free spirit!
