10. My father’s correspondence with the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) makers in Japan

because my father, being the scholarly type, he was always interested in how better to improve the shakuhachi because that takes skill, to put the holes in, you know, and totally… once, long bamboo, with these nodes (? notes), and make sure the holes are placed correctly in order to have the correct pitch. And he would be writing to them and saying, you know, your “A” is off by, is a little flat. And the wife would write back, my husband is very busy, he can’t write back to you because so busy weaving in and out of the sound holes! It was just delightful! But they would correspond like that. And eventually, they would improve it! And this is my father, this was my father’s goal to improve instruments, as well. Koto had no problem ‘cause you can cut the strings. But with the shakuhachi, it was one shot placing the holes,
