16. Chinese and Koreans distanced themselves from the Japanese to avoid racial discrimination.

you have to realize, during the war, evidently, you know, the Chinese were wearing badges saying, “I am Chinese”, the Koreans were saying “We’re the best Jap haters” on their lapel and so we didn’t have a chance. But they didn’t want to be beaten up either because they look like us, so they had to protect themselves as well.
So, they would ask you, right straight out, go to buy groceries, “Are you Japanese, or something else?” And then, they’d say, “We don’t serve Japs!” And that was that! So it was difficult after you came out of camp because this was the attitude. You couldn’t rent. They would reject you. “You just…you’re a Jap, aren’t you? Oh, we have relatives who served in the war. No way!” And we’re also competing with, you know, vets coming home, so this was a very difficult time.
