17. Loved Hadda Brooks, an African American pianist-singer, appearing in “Brownsville,” formerly “Little Tokyo”.

It was called “Brownsville” because the “Blacks” had moved in. And so, we didn’t go down there too often, but gradually the Japanese came back to claim some of the areas so they could start their business again, for they, you know, could. And a lot of … there were a number of night clubs. And I remember a marvelous pianist and singer named Hadda Brooks. She was black, and she would come to record at one of the places on San Pedro. And there was a restaurant, and then there was a studio, and she’d come in a chauffeured driven car, and pop out. And I even remember buying the record ‘cause I said, I’ve got to find this lady! But she was very popular at the time. But I noticed, you know, there were a lot of “blacks”, still, and they had a lot of night clubs, and so forth. But gradually, the Japanese would, could buy back, and this is where they wanted to be.
