this is in the late 50s, they had this international music conference in Pasadena where different nations were represented. And Japan was invited and it happened to be the Seiha school master who had founded, Master Nakashima Utashito. And he and his daughter who was a virtuoso of koto, the two of them came but neither spoke English. And through the connection of my father’s zen teacher, Master Senzaki, called us and said Master Nakashima, who was also a zen student, has come to attend this. Do you think your daughter could help since you understand the music language and you are also into traditional music? So my father said, “We’d be happy to do that.”
